We all know that being healthy and achieving our fitness goals comes down to one major thing–eating. As the saying goes, “anyone can spend an hour working out. It’s what you put on your plate the other 23 hours that determines health.” Sandra Aamodt, a neuroscientist and science writer with two published books, explains why dieting simply Does. Not. Work. Dieting leads to eventual weight gain as deprivation is not a sustainable mindset for eating. The dieter eventually gives in and binges, greatly slowing down the metabolism and causing weight gain.
Why Dieting Will Fail You
“Even at it’s best, dieting is a waste of time and energy. It takes willpower, which you could be using to help your kids with their homework, or to finish that important work project. And because willpower is limited, any strategy that relies on it’s consistent application, is pretty much guaranteed to eventually fail you.” -Aamodt
How to Live a Healthy Life & Be Fit
Aamodt believes healthy living comes down to mindful eating. As Aamodt explains: “Eat as much when you are hungry, and stop when you are full. Give yourself permission to eat as much as you want, and then work on figuring out what makes your body feel good. Sit down to regular meals without distractions. Think about how your body feels when you start to eat and when you stop, and let your hunger decide when you should be done.”
